International Women’s Day Special
The OMID Foundation is proud to host a special and exclusive premiere of the documentary ‘Writing Hawa’ on March 8, 2025, in honor of international Women’s Day. The evening will shine a spotlight on the resilience and stories of Afghan girls and women, who continue to fight for their rights and future despite immense challenges.
About Writing Hawa
Afghan filmmaker Najiba Noori has created a heartfelt and intimate portrait of her mother, Hawa, while also revealing how the fragile progress made in advancing women’s rights is being undone by geopolitical violence.
The film follows the struggles and resilience of Noori’s family, members of the Hazara ethnic group, who have endured discrimination and persecution for generations. Hawa was married off at the age of thirteen to a munch older man who now depends on her care. Throughout her life, she has fought tirelessly to secure a better future for her children. Despite her husband’s complaints, she is determined to learn how to read and start her business. She watches with despair as the United States negotiates a deal with the Taliban. Meanwhile, she has taken in her fourteen-year-old granddaughter Zuhra, who fled her abusive father.
In August 2021, as the final US troops withdraw from Kabul, a lightning-fast taker unfolds, Najiba’s niece is forced to return to the village she had escaped, and Najiba herself is left with just five minutes to decide whether to flee to Paris with nine kilos of luggage and two hard drives of film footage.
